Logging is a big part of industry in the boreal forest. While it is hard to see the forests go, in the opinion of this CO, they are often at the end of their life cycle. The poplar, in particular, die and fall over creating a tangled web of dead wood, ready to be fuel for wild fires. For this reason, I view a certain amount of logging a good thing. It creates firebreaks and simulates the cleansing that Mother Nature would have done. Having said that I hope you noticed the phrase ‘a certain amount’.
As you look across this view that was opened up due to logging, you can see the rolling hills that are not normally visible to us. At the low point at the bottom is the Lesser Slave River, and for centuries, people have walked along it banks moving from one camp to another. Then in the river scows and steamboat era, you would have seen men, many of them Metis, tracking the loaded boats upstream taking supplied to settlements and posts further north.
Enjoy the view and Happy Geocaching!
