The Parish Church of St Mary Magdalen in Ickleton dates from the late 11th century, with additions in the 13th, 14th and 15th centuries. The walls are of field stones and rubble with Barnack limestone dressings, and some reused Roman bricks and flue tiles. The monolithic columns in the nave arcade are probably from an earlier Saxon Church.
A fire in the south transept in 1979 destroyed the roof but cleaning revealed extensive wall paintings from the 12th and14th centuries. Those in the nave are mid 12th century true frescoes, arranged in two tiers with four passion scenes and three martyrdoms of St Peter, St Andrew and St Laurence. Above the chancel arch are 14th century Doom paintings, illustrating the Day of Judgement, with Christ and the Virgin.
The cache is a magnetic nano, and is NOT in the church grounds.
