Geocache Description:

This cache will give you the view of downtown Smith and as you look around imagine the footsteps under the pavement.

From mocassins to rubber boots to modern day shoes this area has been known to many people.  Many of the families in the area are descendents of the settlers that came in on the railroad.  Before that we had the pioneers and missionaries of the north country walking the trails that the pavement now hides;

James Cornwall - Apostle of the North whose many adventures took him along the rivers and trals from Edmonton to Fort McMurray, to Peace RIver, Lesser Slave Lake and Grande Prairie.  If you ever visit Peace River and the monument of Twelve Foot Davis, this is the same James Cornwall who moved Davis's grave from Grouard to where it now resides, according his friends wishes.

Rathbone Smith - General Manager of the ED & BC Railway would have also made numerouse excursions through Smith (the Hamlet is named after him) and any point north of Edmonton where there is or was a railway track.  He was running the show when the tracks were laid.

Father Grouard OMI - actually Bishop Grouard who was responsible for some of the amazing artwork in the Catholic Churches and Cathedrals across the north country including Grouard, which is named after him, and was once known as Lesser Slave Lake.

First Nations people who would have used the rivers as their highways.  Their camps could have been located just about anywhere in this region located at the mouth of the Lesser Slave and Athabasca Rivers.

So many people whose dreams and goals made the north country what it is today - so while you walk on the pavement - remember what was here before it.
