[FR] Des conditions géomorphologiques très précises sont à l'origine de la création au Moyen Âge du village fortifié, considéré aujourd'hui comme l'un des plus beaux sites de France.
Au cours du dernier million d’années, le Lot s’est enfoncé, dessinant progressivement sa vallée. En dégageant le piton rocheux de Saint-Cirq-Lapopie, il a également mis à jour une poche de sables cimentés du Crétacé qui affleure sous le village de Saint-Cirq-Lapopie.
Le sous-sol du quartier de Saint-Cirq, compris entre la colline et le rocher supportant l'église et les ruines du château, est constitué par des sables argileux renfermant une nappe d'eau.
Ce réservoir aquifère était exploité par les anciens habitants de Saint-Cirq par des puits creusés à l'intérieur des caves.
A Saint-Cirq-Lapopie, 3 grandes étapes ont façonné le paysage :
- Il y a plus de 160 MA, la mer jurassique a déposé des sédiments calcaires formant le substratum du paysage, depuis le causse de Saint-Cirq jusqu'au lit du Lot.
- Aux environs de - 50 MA, au Tertiaire, des sables argileux ont comblé complètement une très vaste cavité qui s'étendait du causse de Saint-Cirq peut être jusqu'au niveau du Lot.
- Depuis 5 à 6 MA, de la fin du Tertiaire au Quaternaire, le Lot, en creusant sa vallée, a déblayé ces sables créant le replat supportant le village et séparant ainsi du causse le piton rocheux du château.

[EN] Very specific geological conditions are at the origin of the creation of this strengthened village, considered today as one of the most beautiful sites of France.
During the last million years, the Lot sank, drawing gradually its valley. By clearing the rock peak of Saint-Cirq-Lapopie, it also updated a pocket of concrete sands of the Cretaceous which appears under the village of Saint-Cirq-Lapopie.
The basement of the district of Saint-Cirq, between the hill and the rock supporting the church and the ruins of the castle, is constituted by clayey sands containing a groundwater.
This water-bearing reservoir was exploited by the former inhabitants of Saint-Cirq by wells dug inside cellars.
To Saint-Cirq-Lapopie, 3 big stages shaped the landscape:
- More than 160 MY ago, the Jurassic sea deposited calcareous sediments forming the substratum of the landscape, since the limestone plateau of Saint-Cirq up to the bed of the Lot.
- Around - 50 MY ago, in the Tertiary, clayey sands filled completely a very vast cavity which extended from the limestone plateau of Saint-Cirq until the level of the Lot.
- Since 5 - 6 MY, from the end of the Tertiary to the Quaternary, the Lot, by digging its valley, cleared these sands creating the projecting ledge supporting the village and so separating from the limestone plateau the rock peak of the castle.
