Geocache Description:

Jelenov studenec me vabi

Nad jugozahodnim robom Kočevskega polja valovi gozdnata planota Stojna. Iz nje štrlijo Mestni vrh, Fridrihštajn in Livoldski vrh.

Zato so ga poimenovali  Jelenov studenec.

  • Jelenov studenec,
  • jama nad Jelenovim studencem,
  • debela jelka,
  • bunkerji iz druge svetovne vojne,
  • razgledišče na kočevsko polje z zmajarsko rampo,
  • velik skalni balvan,

Vse ostale slike so seveda zelo dobrodošle. Že vnaprej hvala!

The deer spring calls to me

Above the southwest edge of the Kočevje plain lies a forest covered plateau named Stojna. Rising from it are three hills, Mestni vrh, Fridrihštajn and Livoldski vrh.

The dense forests make it appear quite monotonous from afar, but up close we can find many interesting natural phenomenons here. The forests, consisting mostly of beech and spruce give shelter to many wild animals, the karst ground is full of underground caves, markings on trees invite us for a walk on a nature trail, Fridrihštajn tells a story of tragic love...

The tallest peak on Stojna is Mestni vrh, reaching the height of 1034m. It is a popular hiking destination for people living in Kočevje, a perfect dose of daily exercise for some, and a family trip for others. It is also a popular destination for hikers visiting, since the viewing platform offers a beautiful view on the local hills, the Kočevje plain, Gorjance and during times of good visibility even as far as the Alps. It is a place where one can feast their eyes and rest their soul. The peak itself is a clearing without a view, but there is a logbook, a stamp and some benches to rest.

Mestni vrh can be reached (almost entirely) by car, by bike, on foot... If you park your car in Kočevje, you can choose to go on the »Kalanova pot«, which takes 60-90 minutes of walking but is a bit more steep, or »Grajska pot«, on the south slope of Mestni vrh and takes 90-120 minutes of walking, but is less steep.

Beyond Mestni vrh, the Deer Spring calls to you.

The deer spring is located on Stojna in the middle of a small clearing behind Mestni vrh. Here, water is present in the spring even during the hottest summer days. Just 50m away there isa cabin owned by Planinsko Društvo (Mountaineering Club) Kočevje. The cabin used to be a shelter for lumberjacks, who often watched deer drinking water from the spring, thus the name Deer Spring was born.

The cabin is a starting point for several destinations, such as Fridrihštajn, which is the place of the tragic love story of Veronika Deseniška, and three caves, which are 20 minutes to an hour away. They are Eleonora's Cave, The Cave of Three Brothers and The Ice Cave.

A nature trail leading to Mestni vrh also starts here. The idea for this trail began in the minds of forest workers, based on their many visits to the top of Mestni vrh. The trail is designed to lead from the cabin, past the interesting sights along the way and then circle back to the cabin. It is marked by deer footprints, because of the Deer Spring origin. The goal of the trail is to introduce people to the points of interest, mainly the ones created by nature.

The starting point of the nature trail is the Cabin by the Deer Spring, and the trail holds multiple points of interest:

  • The Deer Spring,
  • The cave above the Deer Spring,
  • Large spruce,
  • World War 2 bunkers,
  • Vantage point, with a view to the Kočevje field,
  • Large boulder,
  • The top of Mestni vrh with a logbook.

The cabin is open on Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. and on Sundays and during holidays from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

When you will find the cache you will first have to unlock the combination lock with the numbers you got by adding all the heights of the summits at the top of the viewing platform.

You can check your coordinates in the geochecker:

The cache is intended for trading stuffed toys, which are packed in PVC bags. Please only trade other stuffed toys, for the stuffed toys in the cache and, if possible, pack them in a PVC bag. We also recommend saving the cache for offline use since there is no reception/limited reception at the cabin. Finally, we would like to ask all visitors to not post pictures that give away information about the stages and the final location to preserve the entire experience for future finders. However we would be very happy to see any other photos you might happen to take. Thank you!

The waypoints are also translated into English so you can solve this cache even if you’re not a native speaker.
