O Edifício Copan é uma construção de 140 metro se altura, 38 andares. Edifício residencial no centro de São Paulo, Brasil. Ele tem 1.160 apartamentos e é um dos maiores edifícios no Brasil.
Concepção, construção e nome
O edifício foi projetado pelo escritório de Oscar Niemeyer, em São Paulo; Niemeyer foi pessoalmente responsável pela famosa fachada sinuosa do edifício. O projeto original, imaginou dois edifícios, sendo o outro um hotel, mas, no final, apenas o edifício residencial foi construído.
A construção começou em 1952 e, após algumas interrupções, foi concluída em 1966. É um dos maiores edifícios no Brasil.
O nome do edifício é um acrônimo para seu desenvolvedor original, Companhia Pan-Americana de Hotéis e Turismo.
Instalações
Atualmente, o edifício tem 1.160 apartamentos, que vão desde pequenos quitinetes a unidades de três quartos grandes. Tem 2.038 residentes, é servidos por 20 elevadores e 221 vagas de estacionamento subterrâneo. O piso térreo abriga 72 empresas e estabelecimentos, incluindo (desde o 1990) uma igreja evangélica, uma agência de viagens, uma livraria e 4 restaurantes. Sua área construída é de 10.572,80 metros quadrados.
Devido ao grande número de residentes, o serviço postal brasileiro atribuiu ao edifício o seu próprio código postal (CEP): 01046-925. O condomínio tem mais de 100 funcionários para atender os moradores e realizar manutenção.
projeto original de Niemeyer continha um parque exterior ao edifício, um segundo parque em uma área aberta do primeiro andar e um telhado-deck. O parque na área exterior é agora usado por um edifício de banco. O parque da área aberta e do telhado estão fechados.
Desde 2014 o edifício inteiro foi coberto por uma cortina azul-preto transparente, para proteger os pedestres de possíveis quedas de mosaicos que se soltam da fachada.
Na cultura popular
O Edifício Copan tem inspirado escritores, cineastas, fotógrafos e outros artistas de todo o mundo. Uma coletânea de contos intitulada Arca sem Noé - Histórias do Edifício Copan, da escritora Regina Rheda, foi publicado em Português em 1994 e em 1995 ganhou o prêmio Jabuti. Também foi publicado em Inglês como histórias do edifício Copan, dentro do volume Primeiro Mundo Terceira Classe e Outros Contos do mix global (University of Texas Press).
O edifício está disponível para ser construído no jogo SimCity 2013.

The Copan Building is a 140-metre (459 ft.) tall, 38-story residential building in downtown São Paulo, Brazil. It has 1,160 apartments and is one of the largest buildings in Brazil.
Design, construction and name
The building was designed by Oscar Niemeyer's office in São Paulo; Niemeyer was personally responsible for the building's famous sinuous façade. The original project envisioned two buildings, the other being a hotel, but in the end only the residential building was built.
Construction began in 1952 and, following some interruptions, was completed in 1966. It is one of the largest buildings in Brazil.
The building's name is an acronym for its original developer, Companhia Pan-Americana de Hotéis e Turismo (Portuguese for "Pan-American Hotels and Tourism Company").
Facilities
Currently, the building has 1,160 apartments, ranging from small studios to large three-bedroom units, and 2,038 residents, served by 20 elevators and 221 underground parking spaces.The ground floor is home to 72 businesses and establishments including (since the 1990s) an evangelical church, a travel agency, a bookstore, and 4 restaurants. Its site is 10,572.80 square meters (113,805 square feet) in area.
Due to the large number of residents, the Brazilian postal service assigned the building its own postal code ("CEP"): 01046-925. The current condominium has over 100 employees to serve residents and to conduct maintenance.
Niemeyer's original design contained a park outside the building, a second park in an open area of the first floor, and a roof-deck. The park outside is now used by a bank building; the first floor park and roof-deck are closed.
Since 2014 the entire building has been covered by a transparent blue-black drape, to protect pedestrians from the facade's loose mosaic tiles.
In popular culture
The Copan Building has inspired writers, filmmakers, photographers, and other artists from all over the world. A short story collection titled Arca sem Noé - Histórias do Edifício Copan ("Ark without Noah - Stories from the Copan Building"), by Brazilian author Regina Rheda, was published in Portuguese in 1994 and won the 1995 Jabuti prize in Brazil. It has also been published in English as Stories From the Copan Building, within the volume First World Third Class and Other Tales of the Global Mix (University of Texas Press).
The building is available to build in the 2013 game SimCity.
