A gruta do Cabeço do Canto encontra-se próxima de 2 trilhos maravilhosos da ilha do Faial. O trilho “Costa a Costa”, que o leva através dos belíssimos cenários dos variados cones vulcânicos da ilha, desde o antigo porto da Ribeirinha, sendo a parte mais antiga da ilha, até ao Vulcão dos Capelinhos, a parte mais recente (1957/58), e o “Trilho dos 10 Vulcões”.
No Faial, não existem inúmeras grutas, não sendo muito extensas, quando comparadas com as outras ilhas. As grutas maiores estão ao nível do mar, não sendo possível chegar a elas através de terra. Uma das grutas Faialenses é a “Gruta do Cabeço do Canto”. Como o nome indica, a gruta está na encosta do Cabeço do Canto, um cone de escoria do complexo vulcânico do Capelo composto por escórias vulcânicas e materias de escoamentos de lava.
A gruta é um tubo de lava, com 18,7 m de comprimento, 7,5 m de largura e uma altura máxima de 5,1 m.
No tecto da da pequena gruta, pode-se ver pequenas estalactites lávicas.
As espécies que podem ser encontradas nesta gruta são: Cixius cavazoricus Homoptera Cixiidae
A gruta está classificada como área protegida, fazendo parte da rede NATURA 200 da Comunidade Europeia.
A cache pode ser feita a pé percorrendo o trilho “Costa a costa” ou o “Trilho dos 10 Vulcões”.
Se não estiver a fazer um dos trilhos, os carros normais podem parar no WP1, que também é o início do trilho até à cache.
WP2 marca o início da segunda parte do trilho.
WP3 é o estacionamento para veículos 4x4

The Cave of Cabeço do Canto is located not far from 2 marvelous trails on the island of Faial. The trail “Costa a Costa” (Coast to Coast) which takes you through the beautiful scenery of the many volcanic cones of the island from the old port of Ribeirinha, being the oldest part of the island, to the Volcano of Capelinhos, the most recent part of the island (1957/58), and the trail “Trilho dos 10 Vulcões” (Trail of the 10 Volcano's)
The amount of caves on Faial island is not very big and their size is, compared to most other island of the archipelago, relatively small. The bigger caves of the island are at sea-level and can not be reached by land. One of the Faialense caves is the “Gruta do Cabeço do Canto”. As the name states, the cave is on the slope of the Cabeço do Canto, a scoria-cone in the volcanic complex of Capelo composed of volcanic scoria (lava-flakes) and lava thrust.
The cave itself is a lava-tube, 18.7 meters long, 7.5 meters wide and the maximum height is 5.1 meters.
On the ceiling of the cave small lava stalacmites can be seen.
The species found in this cave are: Cixius cavazoricus Homoptera Cixiidae
The cave is classified in the network NATURA 2000 of the European Community as protected area
The cache can be reached by foot walking the trail “Costa a Costa”or “Trilho dos 10 Vulcões”
If you are not walking the trail, normal cars can park near WP1 which is also the trailhead.
WP2 marks the beginning of the second part of the trail
WP3 is a parking which can only be reached by quad or 4x4
