Praznik se je včasih imenoval dan Osvobodilne fronte ali samo Dan OF, kasneje je bil preimenovan. Praznuje se ga na dan, ko je bila leta 1941 ustanovljena Osvobodilna fronta (takrat pod drugim imenom).
26. aprila 1941 so se v vili književnika Josipa Vidmarja v Rožni dolini sestale skupine, ki so že pred okupacijo sodelovale v Društvu prijateljev Sovjetske zveze. KPS so predstavljali Boris Kidrič, Aleš Bebler in Boris Ziherl, krščanske socialiste Tone Fajfar, sokole Josip Rus, kulturne delavce pa Josip Vidmar, Franc Šturm in Ferdo Kozak. Ta sestanek je sklicala KPS, udeležence pa so o njem obvestili tik pred zdajci.
Na začetku se je organizacija imenovala Protiimperialistična fronta. Ta se je preimenovala v Osvobodilno fronto šele ob napadu Nemčije na Sovjetsko zvezo junija 1941. V natančnejših zapisih se kasneje pojavlja tudi ime Osvobodilna fronta slovenskega naroda (kratica OF SN). OF je delovala med letoma 1941 in 1953. Njen namen je bil organizacija oboroženega odpora proti okupatorju do končne osvoboditve Slovenije, po koncu vojne pa prevzem oblasti.

The holliday used to be called the Day of the Liberation Front (Osvobodilna fronta = OF), or just Day of OF and it was later renamed. It is celebrated on the day when Liberation Front was founded in 1941 (then under a different name).
26 April 1941 in a villa of the writer Josip Vidmar in Rožna dolina held meeting of groups which were already before the occupation participated in the Society of Friends of the Soviet Union. Communist Party was represented by Boris Kidrič, Ales Bebler and Boris Ziherl, Christian socialists by Tone Fajfar, Sokoli by Josip Rus and cultural workers by Josip Vidmar, Franc Sturm and Ferdo Kozak. This meeting was called by Communist Party, participants were informed about it at the last minute.
At the beginning, the organization was named an Anti-imperialist front. This was renamed in the Liberation Front only after the German attacked on the Soviet Union in June 1941. The detailed records later appears as the name of the Liberation Front of the Slovenian Nation (abbreviated OF SN). OF functioned during the years 1941 and 1953. Its purpose was the organization of armed resistance against the occupier until the final liberation of Slovenia, at the end of the war takeover of government.
