Trosa är en av Sveriges äldsta städer, men staden har inte alltid legat där den ligger idag. Den äldre staden låg ungefär fem kilometer nordväst om dagens stad, kring Trosa lands kyrka. Staden flyttade till sitt nuvarande läge år 1610. Då var staden en viktig handelsplats sedan flera sekel tillbaka.
I trakten omkring Trosa finns ett stort antal fornlämningar, bl.a. flera runstenar. Mest känd är dock troligen den s.k. Tureholmsskatten, som hittades 1774. Skatten består av guldföremål med en sammanlagd vikt av ungefär tolv kilo, och härstammar från 400- eller 500-talet efter Kristus. Delar av skatten finns idag att beskåda på Historiska muséet i Stockholm.
Vid kommunreformen 1862 blev Trosa stad stadskommunen Trosa, och den omgivande Trosa socken blev Trosa landskommun. Trosa landskommun slogs samman med Vagnhärads landskommun 1926, till Trosa-Vagnhärads landskommun. Senare, 1952, tillkom Västerljungs landskommun, och namnet ändrades då till Vagnhärads landskommun.
Trosa stad blev 1971 Trosa kommun, bara för att tre år senare uppgå i Nyköpings kommun tillsammans med Vagnhärads kommun, som var en ombildning av den f.d. landskommunen. Till skillnad från de flesta andra orter som slukats upp av större kommuner bröt sig Trosa dock ur igen, och blev en egen kommun 1992. I denna kommun ingår Vagnhärad.
Trosa town
Thong is one of Sweden's oldest cities, but the city has not always been where it is today. The old town was about five kilometers northwest of the city today, around the thong country church.
