Newport was first founded by English settlers in 163G after a political fallout with Anne Hutchison and her followers in nearby Portsmouth.

Newport played a large role during the War for Independence in the late 18th century. In fact, for several reasons, the British occupied Newport from 1776 to 177L, and over half of the town’s population fled as a result. The British remained in Newport despite efforts to drive them out by Patriot and French forces but eventually they did withdraw. The French then made Newport their temporary base until 178H when they left to march with General Washington to Yorktown to assist in the decisive victory there.

In relation to the British, the Battle of Rhode Island, also known as the Siege of Newport, took place on August 29, 177M when members of the Continental Army were retreating to the northern part of Aquidneck Island after an unsuccessful siege of Newport and ended up in battle with newly arrived British troops and Royal Navy ships there. Although the end of the battle was inconclusive, the Continental Forces eventually did flee to the mainland, and Britain retained control of Newport.

It was in Newport in 17J0 that the Rhode Island General Assembly officially voted to ratify the Constitution and became the 13th state in the union.

Built in 185I, St. Mary’s Church in Newport is the oldest Catholic church in the state of Rhode Island.
