Corridor to the West
Morgan County has a rich pioneer heritage. Part of the amazing heritage is the Mormon Flat trail, a pristine section of the old Mormon trail. You will be taken on a small adventure, following in the footsteps of some 70,000 pioneers that traversed this trail before you. At each of the stages, you will be searching for a large metal washer with the coordinates for the next stage stamped into them. These washers have been attached very securely to a wooden item at each stage.
Please note that a parking fee may be required for the second parking area. The cost is only $2.00.
The Road To Zion - Beginning of your adventure
You will start the adventure in an area called Large Springs. The pioneers would camp here before attempting the biggest climb of the entire trail. The Wasatch mountain range was the last obstacle the pioneers would face before reaching the Salt Lake Valley. After reading the historical sign "The Road To Zion" make your way towards the river in the meadow below.
Stage 1 - Are these what I think they are?
Go to the following coordinates
N 40° 49.408 W 111° 35.134
At stage 1, take a minute to imagine all the covered wagons that would have been camped along this river. Now look for an object that seems out of place in the meadow near the creek. After locating the strange object look for a stamped metal ring with the coordinates stamped into the metal. Use these numbers to get the coordinates for stage 2.
Stage 2 - Mouth of Fort Wells $2.00 Parking Fee Required
With the numbers you found at stage 1, use them to take you to the next stage
Go to the following coordinates
N 40° 48.??? W 111° 35.???
This area is called Mormon Flats and was once home to the Mormon Battalion, back then they called it Fort Wells. If you look to the west you can still see the old stone batteries on each side of Emigration Canyon. Look for a stamped metal ring with the coordinates stamped into the metal. Use these numbers to get the coordinates for stage 3.
Stage 3 - Following the Path of the Pioneers
Using the last three numbers you found at stage 1, subtract 30 from the north and add 130 to the west to get stage 3 coords
Go to the following coordinates
N 40° 48.(Stage 1 Last 3 from North - 30) W 111° 35.(Stage 1 Last 3 from West + 130)
Follow the path that the pioneers would have used(Mormon Flats Trail). However, you get a little break and can use the bridge to cross this part of the river. Just think how hard it would have been to cross the river with a hand cart. Look for a stamped metal ring with the coordinates stamped into the metal. Use these numbers to get the coordinates for stage 4.
Stage 4 - Crossing the Waters
With the numbers you found at stage 3, use them to take you to the next stage.
Go to the following coordinates
N 40° 48.??? W 111° 35.???
Ok, so it wouldn't be a very good pioneer adventure if we didn't have at least one creek crossing. This creek is not very big but depending on the time of year you may get your feet wet. Look for a stamped metal ring with the coordinates stamped into the metal. Use these numbers to get the coordinates to the cache.
Final - To the Cache
With the numbers you found at stage 4, use them to take you to the final cache.
Go to the following coordinates
N 40° 48.??? W 111° 35.???
As you make your way to the cache, to claim your well-earned reward. Take a moment and look around, stop and just listen to the sounds around you. Some say if you listen real close you can still hear the footsteps of the pioneers that passed through this canyon. I hope you enjoyed this little adventure into this little Corridor to the West. Thank you for playing and Happy Caching.
