Manzanita, genus Arctostaphylos, is a plant very common in Arizona. It has many possible uses and many different species (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manzanita). However, in the rim country, areas that have had large "scorched earth" wildfires tend to become overgrown with manzanita, as other plants are unable to survive in the damaged soil. Manzanita does help with erosion. However, it tends to be very thick, and can be nearly impenetrable. I have bushwacked through many stands of manzanita while geocaching. It is passable when it is 2 feet high, difficult when 4-5 feet high, and nearly impossible to get through when 12 feet high. It also makes locals nervous because it tends to burn very hot, so it represents a wildfire danger in spring and summer.
This letterbox hybrid is my tribute to the difficult bushwack that is sometime required to get to local caches. Ironically, there isn't that much manzanita up here, but is alot of scrub oak, agave, rocks, and other challenges. I recommend long pants, sturdy boots, and an up to date tetanus shot. Shorts and sandals are just plain stupid here. Park at the posted coordinates, and follow the south side of the fence to the gate. Go through the gate, then look for the cache. Beware of multiple prickly hazards surrounding the hardy waterproof container. I recommend retrieving it from the north side.
