Sa présence n'est pas étonnante tant ce pape aura influencé la politique du 20e siècle, en Pologne tout d'abord et bien au-delà par la suite. Il a aussi transformé sa fonction en visitant durant les 26 ans de sa mission 129 pays. On estime que plus de 500 millions de personnes ont pu le voir durant cette période.
