Nossa Senhora do Ar

Construída em 1944 pelo Comando das Forças Armadas dos Estados Unidos da América, localiza-se no bairro do Aeroporto.
Com características ecuménicas, foi destinada à prática dos cultos: catolicismo, protestantismos e judaísmo (como se pode ver na imagem), algo que na época causou certa admiração, não apenas aos marienses, mas aos açorianos em geral.
A 6 de Abril de 1947, após autorização do Bispo de Angra, D. Guilherme da Cunha Magalhães, esta capela destinou-se apenas ao culto católico. Desta forma, teve como primeiro padre, o padre Artur Brandão, que faleceu no naufrágio do navio de cabotagem inter-insular N/M Arnel, no baixio dos Anjos, a 19 de Setembro de 1958. Nessa altura a capela sofreu uma reestruturação, onde se construiu uma proteção na entrada (guarda-vento coberto) e uma torre sineira em alvenaria, e foi rodeada de muretes e de um pequeno jardim.
A ermida possuía um palco com um altar muito simples, sendo posteriormente construída uma pequena capela onde se venerava uma imagem de Nossa Senhora do Ar (padroeira da Força Aérea Portuguesa) e onde se encontrava o sacrário.
A 12 de Junho de 1985, esta igreja sofreu um incêndio que a destruiu quase por completo. Apesar dos infrutíferos esforços dos bombeiros e da população para salvar o templo, apenas subsistiu a torre sineira, de alvenaria, que havia sido recentemente construída.
Com recursos públicos e da população, o templo foi reconstruído, sendo inaugurado solenemente a 2 de Janeiro de 2000. A ermida passou a ser de alvenaria mas os traços principais foram mantidos. De referir o moderno e bonito altar, delimitado por uma parede de granito em forma circular.
Presentemente dispõe de pároco que assiste a toda a população católica do Aeroporto.

Our Lady of the Air
Built in 1944 by the Command of the Armed Forces of the United States of America, this chapel is located in the Airport neighborhood.
With ecumenical characteristics, it was destined to the practice of different cults: Catholicism, Protestantism and Judaism (as you can see in the picture), which at the time caused some admiration, not only to Marienses population, but also the Azorean population in general.
On April 6st 1947, after the authorization of the Bishop of Angra, D. Guilherme da Cunha Magalhães, this chapel was intended only to Catholic worship. Thus, we had the first priest, Father Arthur Brandão, who died in the sinking of the inter-island cabotage N/ M Arnel in Anjos on September 19, 1958. At that time the chapel was restructured, where it has built a protection at the entrance (covered guard-wind) and a bell tower in masonry. Also, the chapel was surrounded by low walls and a small garden.
The chapel had a stage with a very simple altar. Later, it was built a small chapel where it was worshiped an image of Our Lady of the Air (saint patron of the Portuguese Air Force) and it has also built the altar.
At June 12, 1985 this church suffered a fire that destroyed almost completely. Despite the fruitless efforts of the firefighters and the public to save the temple, only the bell tower of masonry subsisted which has recently been built.
With public and population resources, the temple was rebuilt and it has solemnly inaugurated on January 2, 2000.
The chapel became made of masonry, but, the main features have been maintained. It is important to mention the modern and beautiful altar, enclosed by a granite wall in circular shape.
Currently, the chapel has a priest who watches the entire Catholic population of the Airport place.
The doors of the chapel are usually open during the day, enjoy entering and admiring this hermitage with unique features.
