Au hameau de la Glacière coulait autrefois la rivière Bièvre, et il y avait à cet endroit de nombreuses mares et étangs. L'hiver, tout cela gelait et les patineurs venaient s'y amuser.
A partir du 17e siècle, apparaissent dans Paris les café-glaciers (le Procope fut l'un des premiers), et une demande accrue pour la glace.
Ainsi, dans cette zone un peu misérable, on s'arrangeait pour que la Bièvre se déverse dans des prairies inondables afin qu'elle gèle l'hiver. La glace était ensuite récupérée afin d'être vendu aux riches particuliers, aux cafés et aux restaurants. Elle était entreposée entourée de paille et recouverte de terre dans des puits maçonnés profonds de 5 à 12m vers Montsouris. Ainsi conservée, elle pouvait être utilisée tout l'été.
Au 19e siècle, Paris était approvisionné par 40 glacières, c'était devenu une véritable industrie, et la glace venait alors de bien plus loin pour alimenter la capitale.
Tout cela disparu avec l'invention de la réfrigération industrielle vers 1865, et n'est resté que le nom de "Glacière", conservés comme une évocation par la rue et la station de métro éponymes.
