< Ochiai-juku >
Ochiai-juku is the 44th (from Nihon-bashi, Tokyo) of the 69 shukubas (= post stations) of the old Nakasendo Road -- one of the Five Routes of the Edo (Tokugawa) period, and one of the two that connected Edo (= today's Tokyo) to Kyoto.
Two big fires hit this post station town in early 1800's, but you can still enjoy some Edo-period architecture such as earthen-wall-made Honjin(*1), Udatsu(*2), and some other old houses here in Ochiai-juku.
*1 An inn for the Tokugawa government officials. Only one Honjin was placed at each post station.
*2 Upper extensions of roofs served as protection from the spread of fires.

< Pine in the street >
The Nakasendo Road from Nakatsugawa-juku in the west turns right at a right angle to the southeast around this intersection near Zensho-ji temple. This sort of bends (=right-angle corners) in the street of post stations are called "Masugata," which were intentionally installed so that the main part of the town -- that is Honjin and its neighborhood -- cannot be seen straight from the outside the town for security reason.
There was no road from the intersection toward northwest in the Edo period. In 1891 of the Meiji period, the new road-construction plan made the temple slightly move to the east but a pine tree in the temple's site remained in the original location. Then the pine tree has been staying at the same place with its trunk projecting out above the road and called "Pine in the street."
The curved trunk of this pine was originally above the gate of the temple, and is also called "Pine the Gate-Crown."

落合宿の散策を始めましょう。
＜落合宿＞
中山道六十九次で、江戸日本橋から数えて44番めの宿場町が落合宿です。
文化元年(1804年)、同12年(1815年)と二度の大火に見舞われましたが、その後築造された土蔵造りの落合宿本陣やうだつ、古い民家などに、江戸時代の面影を垣間見ることができます。

＜路上の松＞
西隣の中津川宿から来た中山道は、善昌寺のあるこの交差点付近で直角に右に曲がり南東に向かいます。このような宿駅の曲がり角を枡形といいます。人為的に設けられたもので、その目的は警備上、宿場の中心部（＝本陣周辺）を直線的に見通せないようにするため、と言われています。
江戸時代には、現在善昌寺の前の交差点から北西に向かっている道はありませんでした。明治24年(1891年)の道路改修工事により、お寺は東側へ移設されましたが、境内にあった松の木はそのまま残されました。このため、この松の木の幹が路上に張り出したまま現在に至っており、「路上の松」と呼ばれています。
また、この松は元々お寺の山門を覆っていたことから「門冠の松」とも呼ばれます。
