Geocache Description:

Come and join us for a quick get together at the Stellenbosch Botanical Gardens, on Febuary 29th 2016. You wil be able to make a find on a Leap Day which comes around only once every four years, and will be awarded a special souvenir for your attendance!

The Botanical Garden is located in the historical center of Stellenbosch and is the oldest university botanical garden in South Africa. This compact Garden houses an enormous diversity of plants, both indigenous to South Africa and exotic. The Garden is open to the public and admission is free. The Botanical Garden is open seven days a week from 8:00 to 17:00. The Garden is closed on certain public holidays.

Parking might be a bit of a problem, so rather park further away and then take a walk through the beautiful town to the given coordinates. There are 2 entrances to the Garden, I have listed both in the waypoints.

The event is from 13h00 - 13h30. Please sign the logbook in this given timeframe! Be sure to load up GC5E47K onto our GPS, as this is a fantastic cache to do if you haven't done it already.

Why do we have Leap Years?

Every four years an extra day is added to the calendar, making the length of the year 366 days, instead of the normal 365. Why on earth does that need to happen?

The calendar is supposed to match the solar year, in other words, the length of time it takes for Earth to orbit the Sun once. But things aren’t quite that simple. It actually takes Earth 365 days, 5 hours, 48 minutes and 46 seconds to complete its orbit (about 365 1/4 days). Those extra hours gradually add up so that after four years the calendar is out of step by about one day. Adding a day every four years allows the calendar to match up to the solar year again.

Remeber to bring and trackables that you might want to swap or trade!
