Geocache Description:

A gentle climb along King's Way from a pretty Hampshire village with a fascinating history.

This cache is hidden just off the King's Way footpath as it climbs out of the picturesque village of Tichborne, near Alresford. The name Tichborne was first coined in early Saxon times and denotes the settlement “at the Itchen Bourne”.

You can either park by St Andrew's Church, services permitting, (N51 04.138 W001 11.335) or in the village itself. Why not make this part of a circular walk, there are plenty of routes in the area, and combine it with a drink or meal in the village pub?

On the way up the hill you get views of Tichborne Park, the Georgian market town of Alresford and glimpses of local wild life.

The King's Way footpath is a 45 mile walk over Hampshire farm and downland from Portchester to Winchester. The path was planned by the Hampshire Area of the Ramblers' Association, and named after Allan King, a leading member in it's early days.

The cache itself is a 2 litre blue topped plastic container with lots of goodies and a list of websites for those interested in finding out more about the village's history and The Tichborne Claimant.

On Lady Day (25th March) the village is very busy for the distribution of the Tichborne Dole. This ceremony dates back to the thirteenth century and there is a well known story involving Lady Mabella and her mean husband. Find out more on the internet or from the church village history booklet.

Take time to visit the peaceful church on your return, there has been a church on this site for at least 900 years.
