Geocache Description:

St Sepulchre without Newgate is so named because in medieval times it stood just outside the city wall near the Newgate.  You will find a sign nearby giving you some of the history of the church.  The church was founded in the 12th century, rebuilt in the 15th century and restored after the Great Fire of London

There is no need to enter the church or grounds to log the cache, it can be completed from the public pavement. Although in theory this should be wheelchair accessible, I have not investigated this. There is no physical cache container, this is an Earth Cache, to log it, complete the logging task and email the answers. Please do not include answers in your log as this will be deleted.

The feature in front of you is the first of its kind to be erected in London.  Beer was the main alternative to water in London prior to clean drinking water being available to all and was generally safer than the water. This feature is polished granite and very distinctive in its colour

Granite Granite is an igneous rock composed of quartz, feldspar and mica. It is molten rock that has solidified under pressure. Depending on the mineral content present, it will range in colour from black to brown, pink, green, off-white. A very hard material, it is excellent for worktops.

According to the Measures of Hardness Scale (MOHS), diamonds are rated at 10 and are the hardest materials on earth. Quartz is approximately 7 and natural granite is somewhere between 6 and 7 on the scale. Man-made granite is around 5 and various marbles test about 3. Hard plastic is close to 2. Most people equate marble to granite but as you can see granite is considerably harder than marble.

Granite in particular has the ability to withstand temperature extremes, modern hydrocarbon and acid rain pollution.

A xenolith (Ancient Greek: "foreign rock") is a rock fragment which becomes enveloped in a larger rock during the latter's development and hardening. In geology, the term xenolith is almost exclusively used to describe inclusions in igneous rock during magma emplacement and eruption.

To be considered a true xenolith, the included rock must be identifiably different from the rock in which it is enveloped; an included rock of similar type is called an autolith or a cognate inclusion.

LOGGING TASK

1) What colour is the predominant stone of the feature?

2) Why do you think granite is such a popular choice for monuments?

3) Describe the geological feature (not man made) in the stone below and to the left of the benefactor's name. Colour & approximate size

4) What type of geological feature do you think this is?

Feel free to include a picture in your log but please do not reveal the feature.
