Water in the Dead Sea looks normal, just like water in other seas, but it's significantly different. You'll feel (literaly!) the difference only when you touch, smell and taste it.
This EC is simple, but I'm sure you wont find any similar earthcache anywhere ;-) Posted coordinates will lead you to a place, where you can safely touch the Dead Sea. Please send answers to below questions in order to add a "Found it!" log.
LOOK
1. Choose any stone covered with salt and try to break off a piece. Describe the structure - are the crystals the same size and color?
TOUCH
2. Put your hand in the water. How does it feel like? Compare your experience with any other salty water, what's the difference?
3. Take some normal drinking water and water from dead sea. Spill both on the same surface. Which one will disapear (evaporate) as first? Why?
4. Take a piece of dry cloth, put it in the water and let it dry. The color may vary depending on the type of material, but does the water soften or harden the cloth?
SMELL
5. What's the source of this "interesting" smell noticeable at GZ? Name the element, that is main part of this gas.
TASTE (OPTIONAL!!)
Tasting the Dead Sea is optional. It's really salty, you can trust me! ;-)
LET'S DO SOME SCIENCE! (OPTIONAL)
This task should be the main and mandatory, but it would be hard to make for all tourists, that came to Israel by plane, so I decided to make it optional.
Take a bottle and fill it with water from the sea. At home, note the weight (A) and let the water completely vaporate. Note the weight of remaining salt (B) and calculate its concentration. Add your result to the log - I'll make a table below showing: your nickname, date, salt concentration, volume of sample.
(It's not mandatory to log the cache so please don't use fake numbers)
Remarks:
Answers in english, polish or german language are welcome.
All above tasks are safe for your health, but be careful and don't stay too long in the water and prevent running water into your eyes.
