Samuel and Louis were the best of friends. The date was April 26th, the year was 1842, and it was a beautiful Tuesday afternoon. Strolling through the park on their daily constitutional, Samuel remarked to his friend, "It's my birthday, tomorrow, you know."
"Yes, I certainly remember," replied Louis. "Not that you considered me quite so carefully those 111 days ago." He held on tightly to his companion's arm as Samuel guided him around a branch that had fallen on the path.
"I'll never live that down, shall I?" chuckled Samuel. "I do feel I quite made up for my error. 33 gifts I bestowed upon you following that forgotten day, one for each year of your life. Did that not satisfy you?"
Before his friend could reply, Samuel stopped them abruptly. "Oh, ho, Louis! I see before us a patch of sidewalk quite recently poured." He leaned down and gingerly touched it. "Yes, it is still wet! I've always wished for a chance such as this!" He jumped up and began skipping about. "I often find myself thinking of that fabled tale of Julius Caesar - you know, the one wherein he finds himself expiring outside the Senate and uses his final breaths to carve a hidden message in those hallowed steps."
Louis ruefully shook his head. "Yes, yes, you speak of it often. But really, defacing public property? You turn 51 tomorrow - you do not think you are above such impish acts?" He paused only for a moment before grinning widely. "Of course you aren't - nor am I! In fact, I know exactly what you should inscribe!"
