Se arrivate a San Bonifacio dalla SP11 non potete fare a meno di notare questo splendido artefatto industriale che si trova alle porte del paese, con la sua presenza che da anni domina quella che è la piccola zona industriale in periferia.
Agli inizi del ‘900, grazie alla nascita dell’Unione dei Consorzi Agrari di Legnago, Cologna Veneta, Isola della Scala, Sanguinetto e San Bonifacio, si sviluppò nella regione la coltivazione della barbabietola da zucchero per favorire l’attività produttiva agraria, che portò nel 1905 alla costruzione di questo stabilimento, lo Zuccherificio Eridania di Villanova.
Lo stabile fu attivo per circa 70 anni, e l’ultima campagna di lavoro fu nel 1967. L’anno successivo venne definitivamente chiuso, ed abbandonato al suo triste declino. Architettonicamente parlando questo stabile può sicuramente essere considerato un artefatto storico ed anche culturale, essendo costruito in origine completamente con mattoni del rinomato cotto veronese.
Mattone su mattone ora però sta cadendo a pezzi, grazie alla solita incuria delle istituzioni ma anche grazie all’ignoranza della gente che purtroppo ha reso il luogo come una vera e propria discarica a cielo aperto.

Brick by brick but now is falling apart, thanks to the usual neglect of the institutions but also thanks to the ignorance of the people who unfortunately made the place like a real open dump.
