Grafton
A film pot from Wrighty’s Cache Dispenser GC65J9G becomes Grafton’s first geocache. Even though the phone box became a Defibrillator Point and a mini library in 2015 it still qualifies for the Fine Pair Series.

Whilst you are in the unspoiled village of Grafton there are one or two historical facts which may interest you.
There was once a Church, the ruins of which were rebuilt into a private house called Norman Cottage, sometime in the 17th Century. A small Norman arch remains, with its lower portion in a ground floor room, and its upper part in a bedroom above. This arch evidently led from the nave into the chancel. Of the nave, the whole of the north wall still stands, measuring 29 feet in length and some 16 feet in breadth. Of the chancel nothing is visible above the surface and the south wall of the cottage is within the original south wall of the church, facing the Norman arch in the south east corner of the room instead of the middle.
Just above Grafton on the public footpath to the Bluebell Woods, there is a field known as Knights Field. There are several large stones to mark the spot where Edward IV was supposed to have knighted some of his troops here after the Battle of Tewkesbury in 1471.
A rather lovely poem by John Drinkwater gives Grafton a claim to cultural fame. It starts;
God laughed when he made Grafton
That’s under Bredon Hill,
A jewel in a jewelled plain.
The seasons work their will
On golden thatch and crumbling stone,
And every soft-lipped breeze
Makes music for the Grafton men
In comfortable trees.
