In this area of the Promontory it may happen that you encounter a seldom specimen of Chamaerops humilis, also known as Mediterranean Dwarf Palm.
LA PALMA NANA
La palma nana ( lat. Chamaerops humilis ) è una pianta di origine mediterranea, d'aspetto cespitoso con fusti multipli, non piú alti, in natura, di 2 m, caratteristica dalla quale deriva il nome volgare “nana”.
I frutti sono carnosi, ovoidali, di colore giallo-rossastro, lunghi 2-3 cm, non commestibili.
È diffusa in tutto il Mediterraneo occidentale dal sud del Portogallo a Malta e dal Marocco alla Libia.
In Italia si trova lungo tutta la fascia costiera occidentale, dalla Sicilia alla Toscana centro-meridionale, comprese alcune isole del Mar Tirreno; il promontorio di Piombino è considerato il limite nord naturale della specie in Italia.
È diffusa soprattutto in zone calde, vicino alle coste; predilige esposizioni soleggiate e teme il freddo intenso. In ambiente naturale cresce principalmente su terreni rocciosi o sabbiosi. Ecologicamente è molto utile contro l'erosione e la desertificazione, si rigenera dopo gli incendi con successivi ricacci.
In tutti i paesi del Mediterraneo occidentale, dove cresce spontanea, le foglie della Palma nana sono state sempre utilizzate per lavori d'intreccio di vario tipo. Il germoglio apicale viene utilizzato nell'alimentazione come cavolo-palmizio, soprattutto nei paesi del Nord Africa, ma anche in Sicilia dove è noto come ciafagghiuni.

THE MEDITERRANEAN DWARF PALM
The Mediterranean Dwarf Palm (latin: Chamaerops humilis ) is a shrub-like clumping palm, with several stems growing from a single base. The stems grow slowly and often tightly together, eventually reaching up to a 2 m height in a natural environment. Because of their bitterness and high tannin content, the fruit are not used for human food.
It is mainly found in southwestern Europe as well as Northwest Africa (Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia). It is the northernmost naturally occurring palm in the world, the Promontory of Piombino is considered to be the northernmost natural limit of the Dwarf Palm along the Italian peninsula. Chamaerops humilis is adapted to regimes of frequent burning, which it survives largely by re-sprouting from underground rhizomes and from fire-damaged stems. Such factors make the species ecologically important in preventing erosion and desertification.
The leaves of the adult plants have been used to make brooms and for weaving mats, carrier baskets, and similar articles. The husk is edible before it becomes too tough to eat as it matures.
