Halkirk is known to be Scotland's first planned village and sits just outside Thurso in Caithness. At one time Halkirk housed two distilleries, a Cathedral and a Poorhouse. Today there are still signs of some of these within the Parish. In September 1222 a group of husbandmen forced Bishop Adam of Caithness, into his kitchen where they burned him to death in a vat of fat because of his continually increasing the tax on butter from the impoverished tenants. The station was closed in 1960 as a casualty of the Beeching cuts.
