Statue of Liberty

Originally, the statue of Liberty (1788-1800) was erected outside the city walls. The monument was erected to mark the abolition of a rule that tied men between 14 and 36 years to remain in the farm or mansion, where they were born.

The Liberty was on a roundabout on the busy road that led to the Western accessport to København, and stood surrounded by trees. The farmers from the surrounding villages and the vesterbroske butchers passed the monument when they were in and sell their goods at the Copenhagen squares.

Many of the street's users came a long way, and while they kept in line to pay tax on the goods they brought with them, there was plenty of time to fall into conversation and spend money at the stalls and outlets along the way. Also when market day ended, and the peasants went home, there was ample opportunity to use some of the money earned on Vesterbro entertainment. It was part of the explanation for the neighborhood's early growth. Another explanation was the establishment of a market for live animals and related butchers in connection with the slaughter was banned within the city ramparts in the late 1500s.
