The town of Kočevje
Altitude: 464m
Population: approx. 10.000
Kočevje (german Gottschee) is a town, which lies on a polje (karst field) called Kočevsko polje, next
to Rinža, a disappearing river. It is the administrative, economic and cultural center of Kočevska.
Kočevska (region named after Kočevje) lies between the Loška and Ribniška valley to the north,
Bela Krajina to the east and rivers Kolpa and Čabranka to the south. It covers an area of 555,4km2
and has a population of 16.558 people living in 74 settlements.
The area around Kočevje is rich with forests and is famous for its large population of brown bears.
Hikers are often attracted to the area by Mestni vrh and the ruins of castle Fridrihštajn, which was
built in 1422 by Friderik, count of Celje. Kočevska is marked by a special history. For almost 600
years the area was populated by Gottscheers (german settlers of Kočevje region), who lived in a
cultural and linguistic »bubble« in the middle of slovenian territory. Reminders of their lives still exist
today, scattered all over the region, but they are best remembered in the Pokrajinski museum. The
museum is housed in Šeškov dom (formerly Sokolski dom), where in 1943 the Assembly of the
Delegates of the Slovene Nation was held.
Multiple monuments and commemorative symbols still retain the memory of NOB. The town square
can be found close to the cache. There stands a monument to the NOB (waypoint), in the location of
an Aursperg castle, which stood there for centuries before it. It is the work of sculpterers Lojze
Lavrič, Bog Pengov, Stane and Marjan Keršič and architect Zoran Didek. A monument (waypoint) to
the national hero, Mirko Bračič, can be found near the cache as well.
The girl with a flute
The cache offers an insight into the work of Stane Jarm and the nearby parish roman catholic church
of Kočevje which are situated in the centre of the town next to the bridge over the river Rinža. The
statue “Deklica s piščalko” (literally translated to: A girl with a flute) is a bronze statue, made in 1959
and placed on a fountain in Kočevje in the year 1963. It is one of the most known creations of Stane
Jarm, a Slovenian sculptor and educator. It is placed next to St. Bartholomew's Parish Church of
Kočevje, a neo-Romanesque building, completed in 1903 according to plans by the architect
Friedrich Freiherr von Schmidt.
