6. Haytor Bracken Traditional Geocache

This cache has been archived.

dartymoor: Archiving this series after two years as the paths have become even more overgrown in this time and 5-6 was always really hard going. Kept it going a month longer for the Mega.

The caches were collected in this morning and a biodegradable scrap of paper left at #1 as explanation for anyone with an old PQ.

Thank you to those who enjoyed this series.

Geocache Description:

From the waypoint at #5, climb upwards through the bracken. There is no one clear path so choose your route.

The steep sided gullies here are known locally as "Tinner's Girts". They were created by men, notably in the late 1700's as the industrial revolution drove a demand for Tin. The workers diverting water to run down existing natural channels to wash out tin and other minerals that had naturally eroded and then accumulated in streambeds over millions of years. To aid this, they moved rocks out of the steambed forming these channels. The water, containing the suspended particles of tin were collected downstream and allowed to settle.
