5. Haytor Bracken Traditional Geocache

This cache has been archived.

dartymoor: Archiving this series after two years as the paths have become even more overgrown in this time and 5-6 was always really hard going. Kept it going a month longer for the Mega.

The caches were collected in this morning and a biodegradable scrap of paper left at #1 as explanation for anyone with an old PQ.

Thank you to those who enjoyed this series.

Geocache Description:

To reach this cache, follow the path from #4 and bear left at the waypoint. Pass through a deep cutting in a bank and past the some masonry remains of Bagtor Mine on your right to GZ. Return to this waypoint once you have found the cache as there is no right of way beyond this cache.

Buried under this bracken are many of the remains of the once sprawling and substantial Bagtor Tin Mine, which worked the Haytor Consols. A steam engine fired by local peat pumped and drove machinery. This was a major mine whose above-ground workings extend for a considerable distance (including a significant adit and shaft downhill that the CO once helped clear in the early 90s)
