Geocache Description:

Scadbury Story

Scadbury Moated Manor

You don't need to go to the given coordinates - all the locations are on the circular path.

Scadbury Park has a history reaching back to the mid 13C, when it was known as Scathebury. Between 1424 and 1983 it’s been almost exclusively in the hands of four families - Walsingham, Bettenson, Townshend and Marsham-Townshend. On the Wherigo you will meet 12 of the owners and learn something of their history.

This Wherigo cache takes you on a walk around the park, following part of the Acorn Trail (see Related Web Page), a nature trail set up by London Borough of Bromley, the current owner of the park. You can start anywhere and move in either direction around the path, but for chronological order start at the Old Perry Street car park and walk anti-clockwise (like the Acorn trail). The character locations will become visible when you are within about 400m. When you enter a character's zone you will find some history of the character and often will receive one or more gold coins. In four cases you will have to answer a question to earn the coins. When you have 12 gold coins the cache location will appear (you will get at least 12 coins if you visit each location, even if you get the questions wrong). There is a bonus cache, Scadbury Story Bonus , associated with this Wherigo, the location of which will be revealed when you have visited all the locations and collected 15 gold coins (correctly answered at least 3 of the 4 questions).

A few logs on my earlier Scadbury Stroll Wherigo have commented on how short the walk through Scadbury Park was, so this cache should satisfy them, as it will take about an hour to complete and is roughly 2 miles. Please make sure you look around while doing the Wherigo – you are in a local nature reserve, so don’t spend all your time staring at the screen! If you have a smartphone please make sure the sound is turned on.

This Wherigo requires all the zones to be active at once, which causes a high processing load. It is therefore recommended that you use a smartphone rather than a Garmin device, as these have been known to struggle or even fail.

Roadside parking is available at several places around the park, I have added coordinates for the two off-road car parks. Note that these are closed at dusk. The whole walk is off-road but on unsurfaced footpaths at all times.
