Geocache Description:

A straightforward multi based at Tideford Church dedicated to St Luke.
Roadside parking is available near the church and there is a village car park on the same side of the road as the church about 100 metres downhill.

The Church

Tideford literally means the "Ford Over the River Tiddy" and the existence of the village dates from around 1100 AD. It sits on the very busy A38 road between  Saltash and Liskeard. The main growth of the village was in the 18th century when the Port Eliot Country estate built houses there.

The Victorian church of St Luke was designed by renowned architect George Wightwick. The building was originally erected as a chapel-of-ease in St Germans parish and was consecrated on 31 July 1845, consisting of a chancel, nave and gable-cote containing two bells. The church is fitted with oak seats and contains a pulpit. The registers date from 1845.

The bell gable-cot was removed because of concerns about its structural safety and is now placed unusually at shoulder height to the left of the entrance porch with a mechanism that can be operated from inside the church to call the faithful to prayer.

Tideford is now part of the united parishes of St Germans, Hessenford, Downderry and Tideford.
