Some History
The first Free Church service was held in the 'hut in the woods' on May 1st 1921. This was one of the workmen's huts used during the construction of the early part of the city. As the congregation grew, meetings were held in various locations including the Lawrence Hall of Applecroft School.
In 1928 the land in Church road was consecrated and the church building designed by Louis de Soissons, the city architect. It was completed in 1929 at a cost of £9,156.
The Church buildings consist of a main hall, seating 200 with a full PA and loop system for the hard of hearing and an associated choir room and vestry. The main reception area has associated toilets and a lower hall with kitchen and quiet room. Upstairs there are three main rooms and a small kitchen.
The Grounds, which surround the Church, comprise a car park, a paved area with barbecue and a large area of grass. Most recently a garden of remembrance has been designed and developed by the Grounds Team and there are plans in train for the extension of the car park area.
The Manse, which is situated on the edge of the Church grounds adjacent to Parkway, was constructed in 1969.
