Geocache Description:

This geocache is part of the Church Micro series and will bring you to this unusual 19th century church which is both tucked away (being on it's own little lane that goes no-where else) and imposing (being built on a little hill above the road). It is also unusual in that it has no churchyard, only a car park. The cache is to be found right next to the building.

St Mary's Church was built for Reverend George Wade Green, who had purchased Court Henry estate in 1830. The church was transferred to the Church in Wales in 1930s. It was erected in 1832 (as stated on the building), probably to the designs of Thomas Richardson, gentleman architect and friend of Reverend Green.

The nave and tower are constructed of rubble stone. The remainder of the building is constructed of stone with lighter freestone dressings. The roof has crested ridge tiles. The nave has a five-bay boarded wagon roof with an unusually wide span, the ribs of which are on corbelled wall posts.  The font, with square Norman bowl with pointed lobes around its base on a later octagonal stem with square base, was brought from another church. The pews and polygonal wooden pulpit are thought to date to 1890. The east window commemorates Reverend George Wade Green (died 1868). It depicts the Resurrection, and is thought to be by Mayer and Co, London. It is similar to the chancel south window, signed Mayer & Co. The south transept has an early twentieth century window depicting the Good Shepherd flanked by St Francis of Assisi and St David. The nave's south window is a First World War memorial window, depicting St George and a legionnaire at the crucifixion. A brass plaque beside the font commemorates Eric Green, killed in India in 1900.

This church now serves the community of Cwrt Henri which has a school, a community shop and a car saleroom!

There are two ways to access this church. You can either leave your car at the parking co-ordinates given, walk 20m along the road until you see an old iron gate on the left, then follow the concrete path through the field to the church, or if you prefer (or if you have mobility problems) you can drive up the small lane to the church itself. There is a wooden gate across the bottom of the lane that leads to this church. This is to keep out the cows that journey the lane twice a day, not to keep you out! Please feel free to open it and drive up, but PLEASE SHUT THE GATE BEFORE YOU GO.

Once you arrive at the church the cache is, I hope, accessible to all abilities.

The rating is given assuming you have driven up to the church car park. The terrain rating if you park at the Reading Room is higher.

The cache is small and sneaky with no room for swaps. Please bring your own writing tool.
