Quem passa pelo bairro da Liberdade, em São Paulo, pode nem perceber um pequeno beco ao passar pela Rua dos Estudantes, entre as famosas ruas Galvão Bueno e da Glória. É nesse beco que encontra-se a Capela dos Aflitos, um lugar com um passado mórbido, cheio de mistério e histórias assustadoras.
Por volta de 1775 foi inaugurado o Cemitério dos Aflitos, no mesmo local onde hoje está a Capela, construída quatro anos depois. Foi o primeiro cemitério da cidade de São Paulo. Em 1858 foi desativado após a inauguração do primeiro cemitério público da cidade: O Cemitério da Consolação, (onde encontram-se sepultadas muitas personalidades históricas).
O Cemitério dos aflitos era reservado apenas para o sepultamento de indigentes, para os escravos que não pertenciam à Irmandade do Rosário e para os condenados à morte na forca, os chamados supliciados. O santuário foi consagrado a Nossa Senhora dos Aflitos que, na tradição católica, representa a Mãe de Jesus no momento em que Ele agoniza na cruz. O cemitério ficava próximo ao Largo da Forca, onde os condenados eram executados. Hoje, nesse mesmo local, está o Largo da Liberdade, onde está a estação de metrô Liberdade.
Onde hoje está a Capela dos Aflitos muitos sentenciados a morte durante os séculos XVIII e XIX foram enterrados. O caso mais surpreendente registrado foi o de Francisco José das Chagas, na manhã de 20 de Setembro de 1821.
Chaguinha (ou Chaguinhas) como ficou conhecido, foi acusado de ser o responsável por um levante intitulado “Revolta nativista” onde reivindicava o pagamento dos soldos que já estavam 5 anos atrasados, bem como a igualdade de direitos entre os cabos brasileiros e portugueses.
Chaguinha foi condenado à forca. Foram três tentativas de enforcá-lo que fracassaram porque a corda misteriosamente arrebentava, até que em uma quarta tentativa seu corpo sem vida ficou pendurado na forca. Devido a seu sofrimento, surgiu uma grande devoção a Chaguinha em torno da sua morte, que comoveu a sociedade paulistana da época. Muitos acreditavam em milagre, mas o sofrimento de três tentativas frustradas de execução causaram grande sofrimento a Chaguinha, que morreu na quarta tentativa de enforcá-lo. Muitos acham que a prova da inocência de que pretendem até hoje envolver Chaguinha, estava ali, apenas na teimosia da corda, em se negar ao enforcamento.
Acredita-se que o bairro da Liberdade ficou conhecido por esse nome, devido aos gritos de “Liberdade” de populares que acompanhavam o enforcamento de Chaguinha e pediam sua libertação.
Acredita-se também que Chaguinha ainda perambula pelo bairro da Liberdade, inconformado com o seu fim e com o de muitos outros em situações tão desesperadoras quanto a sua.
Algumas pessoas acreditam que a região é assombrada, devido à presença do cemitério e da crença que ainda existam corpos de pessoas enterradas sob a Capela.
A Capela dos Aflitos tem uma ligação muito grande com outra igreja da região, a Capela das Almas dos Enforcados, que fica em frente ao local onde escravos eram enforcados.

Who visits the neighborhood of Liberdade in São Paulo, may not even realize a small alley to go through the “Estudantes” Street, between the famous streets “Galvão Bueno” and “Gloria”. It is in this alley that is the Chapel of the Afflicted, a place with a morbid past, full of mystery and scary stories.
By 1775 the Cemetery of the Afflicted was opened, in the same place where now stands the chapel, built four years later. It was the first cemetery of the city of São Paulo. In 1858 it was disabled after the opening of the first public cemetery of the city: The Cemetery of “Consolação”, (where are buried many historical figures).
The Cemetery of the Afflicted was reserved only for the indigent burial, for the slaves did not belong to the Rosary Brotherhood and those condemned to death by hanging, so-called tortured. The sanctuary was consecrated to Our Lady of the Afflicted that in Catholic tradition, is the Mother of Jesus at the time He agonizes on the cross. The cemetery was near the “Largo da Forca”, where the condemned were executed. Today, that same site is the “Largo da Liberdade”, where is the subway station.
Where now stands the Chapel of the Afflicted many sentenced to death, during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries were buried. The most striking case recorded was of José Francisco das Chagas, on the morning of September 20, 1821.
Chaguinha (or Chaguinhas), as it became known, was accused of being responsible for an uprising entitled "Revolt nativist" which claimed the payment of wages that were already five years late, and the equal rights of Brazilians and Portuguese cables.
Chaguinha was sentenced to hang. There were three attempts to hang him that failed because the rope mysteriously burst, but in the fourth attempt his lifeless body hung on the gallows. Due to his suffering, there was a great devotion to Chaguinha around his death, which moved São Paulo society of the time. Many believed in miracles, but the suffering of three execution failed attempts caused great suffering to Chaguinha, who died in the fourth attempt to hang him. Many feel that the evidence of innocence that they intend today involved Chaguinha, was there, only the string stubbornness in refusing to hanging.
It is believed that the “Liberdade” neighborhood became known by this name because of the cries of "Freedom" popular that accompanied the hanging of Chaguinha and demanded his release.
It is also believed that Chaguinha still roams the neighborhood of Liberdade, unhappy with his order and with many others in situations as desperate as himself.
Some people believe that the region is haunted due to the presence of the cemetery and the belief that there are still bodies of people buried in the Chapel.
The Chapel of the Afflicted has a great connection with another church in the region, the Chapel of Souls of the Hanged, which is opposite to where slaves were hanged.
