At midday on the 21st November 1913 William Donaghy left the school in Warrington where he taught Science and dissapeared. Just three months later he was found beside a stone in a remote part of Dartmoor. He was 25 years old and was wearing inadequate clothing to be on the moors. upon him he wore a spotted tie and a swiss wrist watch. Amongst his possessions were a Dartmoor guide book £20 in gold coins and a cloakroom ticket dated Feb 4th from Exeter railway station. It is likely his death resulted from hypothermia.
When the cloakroom ticket was redeemed by the Police a bag was found which had been deposited under a false name. Inside the bag was a revolver and ammunition.
The mystery of why William left home and work and what he was doing on Dartmoor has never been solved.
The mystery doesn't quite end there. 20 years later in 1934 the body of Walton Howard was found at Rowter Marsh on Dartmoor. He taught at the same school as Donaghy and was wearing the same watch and tie!
