Sempre que passo com algum familiar junto a esta capelinha, ouço estórias sobre passeios de verão, piqueniques na altura da Páscoa, Dia de Todos os Santos (01 de novembro) e outros eventos que seriam comuns no dia a dia familiar, em meados do século XX. Mas sempre que questionei a minha mãe sobre a origem do altar, nunca me soube explicar, nem ela nem os meus tios.
Sobre a sua função principal, não existirão dúvidas: salvar e rezar às almas do Purgatório. Mas sobre a sua origem, restam apenas alguns mitos e lendas. Falaram-me da "Unha de Boi", uma estória da zona, mas da qual já se perdeu o sentido.
Outra das justificações para a construção das Alminhas, bastante mais pausível, terá a ver com uma batalha tida no início do século XIX, entre forças portuguesas e forças invasoras espanholas. Aliás, grande parte destes monumentos foram construídos associados a eventos trágicos, normalmente sempre envolvendo o derramamento de sangue.
Mas a função aqui é meramente dar a conhecer este ponto da Freguesia da Aldeia da Mata, de onde é originária a minha família materna, local onde podem parar um pouco e meditar.
E não se esqueçam, caso acreditem, de rezar pelas Alminhas.

Whenever I walk with a family member next to this little chapel, I hear stories about summer trips, picnics on Easter time, the Feast of All Saints (November 1st) and other events that would be common on family day in the middle of the century XX. But whenever I questioned my mother about the origin of the altar, she couldn't explian it, neither she nor my uncles.
About it's main function, the objetive is quite clear: to save and pray for the souls in Purgatory. But about its origin, they are nothing more than myths and legends. They told about "Unha de Boi" (Ox Nail), a local story that lost meaning across time.
Other of the justifications for the constrution of Alminhas (little souls), much more likely to be real, is a battle that took place around this lands, in the beggining of 19th century, between the portuguese army and the spanish invasor forces. Many of the monuments of this kind where built where a tragic event took place, normally envolving blood share.
But my intention is merely to show this place of Aldeia da Mata, where my mother's family was born and raised, and for you to stop a while and meditate a bit.
And, if you believe in it, don't forget to pray for the Alminhas.
