This cache is the ninth in the 'Surrey Arts' series started by Woking Wonders to commemorate people of significance in the various arts (literary, musical, etc.) with Surrey connections. The series was inspired by the excellent 'X Marks the Spot' puzzles.
To find the cache, you will need to identify X:
- X was born in Surrey, studied medicine at Cambridge, and died in London aged just 50.
[Year of birth = 19AB]
- X served with the Royal Army Medical Corps in North Africa during the Second World War.
[Unit number = CD]
- X's best known work (and adaptation) is a fictionalised account of their war-time experiences.
[Year first published = 19EF]
But there's more to it than that - this is an 'arts' puzzle with a mathematical twist:
- Imagine you had to reverse a vehicle up a slope using just its starting handle...
If the vehicle's wheels have a circumference of 2.5m, the gear ratio is 50:1, and you can manage one full turn of the handle every 5 seconds, then how long will it take to travel 90m?
[Time in hours = G.H]
And finally:
- Imagine you had to do it all over again! Name the vehicle.
[Sum of letter values = IJ where A=1, B=2, …, Z=26]
The cache can be found at: N 51° 2X W 000° 3Y
where 1000*X = (( A + C + E + G + I ) * 25 ) - 6
and 1000*Y = (( B + D + F + H + J ) * 30 ) + 15
Congratulations on the FTF to Woking Wonders.
