Być na Białołęce i nie zobaczyć Kanału Żerańskiego - to nie uchodzi. Szczególnie, że okolica jest silnie skanalizowana od dawna, co widać na załączonej mapie z lat 30. XX wieku. Tak więc były tu Kanał Bródnowski, Kanał Królewski, Kanał Markowski czyli uregulowana rzeka Długa, Nowy Kanał...
Kanał Królewski powstał na przełomie XVII i XVIII wieku i odwadniał Puszczę Słupecką. Później w Królestwie Kongresowym postanowiono skrócić drogę wodną z Warszawy do Narwi i przekopać żeglowny kanał. Do pomysłu wrócono w wolnej Polsce - prace prowadzono w roku 1919, potem w latach 1935-38, a budowa kanału w obecnym kształcie miała miejsce w latach 1951-1953.
Niestety od lat 90. XX wieku wraz z upadkiem żeglugi na Wiśle kanał stracił na znaczeniu dla transportu i dziś głównie służy rekreacji.
