This cache is placed in the Riserva Naturale del Monte Cofano.
From here you can see the vermeti trottoir (sidewalk) that consists of the concretion of cylindrical shells of Dendropoma petraeum and Vermetus triquetrus, a gastropod mollusk characterized by a tubular shell thick triangular section. Individuals of D. petraeum and V. triquetrus settle on hard substrates in tide level and end up cementing the tops outcropping of rocks, forming a continuum that takes the spatial development of a platform and that in the most favorable cases cannot reach the magnitude of a few meters. It’s an important bio-structure typical of this coastline (Trapani) and Egadi Islands and it is similar to coral reef. It will possible to see closer the vermeti trottoir at the Tonnara Tower.
The cache is placed at the entrance of the Sea Trail that will take you to the last cache of this trail with a 4,5 km walk (one way).
Notice: you need to pay a ticket for the access to Monte Cofano Reserve: 2€ full ticket, 1€ reduced ticket (groups), free ticket (children under 10 years).

Da qui puoi vedere il trottoir (o marciapiede) a vermeti è una piattaforma carbonatica litoranea che si espande verso il mare, formata in seguito ad un processo di cementificazione di gusci di alcune specie di molluschi della famiglia dei Vermetidi. Si tratta di un'importante biostruttura tipica delle coste del Trapanese e delle Egadi, per molti versi simile alle barriere coralline. La sua crescita è legata principalmente all'azione di due specie di molluschi gasteropodi: Dendropoma petraeum e Vermetus triquetrus. Sarà possibile vedere da vicino il trottoir a vermeti più avanti, alla Torre della Tonnara.
La cache è posizionata all'inizio del Sentiero del Mare: con una camminata di 4,5 km (solo andata) arriverete all'ultima cache del trail.
Attenzione: l'ingresso alla Riserva è a pagamento: biglietto intero 2€, biglietto ridotto 1€ (gruppi e residenti), ingresso libero per bambini fino ai 10 anni.
