Island of the Hiding Place Traditional Geocache

French voyageurs visited local tribes in the area during the 1600s and 1700s to trade with them for beaver pelts.  Come visit where the Potawatomi live and do some trading as well. And don't be afraid to pick up a traveler along the way.

Isle a la Cache is French for "Island of the Hiding Place".  Jolliette and Marquette passed this way on their return journey exploring the Mississippi River in 1674. The first recorded identification of Isle a la Cache dates to 1690. Explorers and traders have traveled these waters and used this island as a waypoint since then.  Legend has it from early Chicago settler John Kinzie that a French trader cached his goods here to negotiate safe passage with the Potawatomi Indians down the Des Plaines River.   Voyageurs traded with these Indians for beaver pelts, giving in exchange European goods.  To learn more about this history, come visit the Isle a la Cache Museum!
