Geocache Description:

A straightforward Church Micro based upon the Parish Church at Lanreath. The headline coordinates take you to the headstone of Roasaline Emma which is the first stage of this multi cache.

The Church

Lanreath Church is dedicated to the Celtic St Marnarch of whom little is known.
It is a beautiful country church which has a large part of its original Norman structure intact.
The parish clergy of the day appear to have prevented the excesses of Victorian "Restorations" which are common in Cornish churches and therefore it remains much as it was from the 15th century.
There is a nice gable sundial above the entrance porch which dates from 1828.
Bell ringing has gone on here for centuries and the painted panel of Ringers Rules dates from 1750.
There are numerous examples of good quality wood carving in the Rood Screen and in the stalls, pulpit and bench ends. Much of the carving dates from the 16th Century.
A particular memorial worth looking at is the Roll of Honour for the Great War on which are painted the names of all the men from the Parish who went to fight. Those names painted in red did not return whereas those painted in black did come home. A brief examination of the names shows how fortunate some families were. The list also indicates the numbers of young men who left the land at this time to join up and the impact that this must have had on local farm labour.
This church is well worth spending some time inside to view its many fine, original features
