Geocache Description:

SUMMARY

This is my first Geocache.

This bridge was built in 2013 to replace the old timber 2 lane bridge that was there before.

DESCRIPTION

In grade 3 I did a school project on the bridges around Eltham.  So I have used this research to start a series of caches in these locations.

When you look over the mesh fence next to the bike path, and down at the Diamond Creek, it is hard to imagine that the water would ever get up to the trail.  In November 2004 it did!  It destroyed a lot of footbridges along the creek.  Over the next few months the council repaired a number of the bridges to only have them damaged in February 2005.  Diamond Creek rises and falls rapidly after heavy rain in the surrounding hills, but rarely floods over the banks.  In the early 1990's it flooded even higher than the 2004/05 floods.  The old timber bridge had markings showing the height of the water, which was well above the mesh fence.

In the photo the water has already started to fall.

The bridge was not damaged in the flood but was old and in need of replacement.  It is an important river crossing in the area to cross over Diamond Creek.

I have placed the cache nearby and high enough to prevent it being washed away in flood! It is also too high for kids to reach (and it would appear for some adults judging by some logs).  Cache is a camouflaged Eclipse tin.
