Geocache Description:

Geocaches last forever (or at least six months) but Geoevents last as short as 30 minutes and then are gone forever

This is cache is to remind us of all the fun we have at Geoevents!

If you are new to Geocaching and have not yet been to a Geoevent, look them up and see when the next on is near you. You get to meet other cachers and even if you don't intend to, you will learn something new about geocaching! Geoevents are great opportunity to meet some of the people you only read about in logs.

If you have been to Geoevents before you know they are a great part of geocaching and really help tie the geocaching community together. putting a face to geocaching.

But no Geoevent can last forever, they all happen and then end. This cache is dedicated to all the great times we had at past Geoevent and in hope that new Geoevent will be born soon!

Optional: Feel free to share a story or memory from a Geoevent in your log

Cache has a log only

This Cache will take you to Independence Park on the Corner of Victory Boulevard or as it is called in this neighborhood, Independence Way.

This is the Parade rout of the oldest still running 4th of July Parade! Story has it that in order to announce the end of the Revolutionary War, an American Solider on horseback got off a ship at the Pire at the far other end of Victory Blvd in Tompkinsville, and rode the full length of the street to a ferry pier that was at this end to take him to New Jersey. As he rode he announced the American Victory over the British. In years to follow Staten Island reenacted this with parades that covered the full length of what they renamed Victory Blvd.

The Parade does not cover the full length of the street anymore but only this small section in the neighborhood of Travis. To commemorate it being the longest lasting Independence Parade still running, this stretch was duel named Independence Way. A bit redundant if you ask me, but no one did.

Independence Park was opened in 2011 to commemorate the 101th year of the Travis section of the parade. This park is attached to the historic Sylvan Grove Cemetery, a collection of crumbling headstones, demarcating the final resting place of Revolutionary War soldiers, Civil War veterans and other Staten Island historic families.
