Once Upon a Time there was a King who reigned over a great and wondrous kingdom. Now this King had a problem because he had no children. Who would he pass his crown to? Sadly, before he could answer this question, the King died.

There were many contenders to take his crown. Some even believed that the old King had promised it to them. It was a time of turmoil and soon armies began to gather. In the meantime a man stepped forward, the richest and most powerful of all and soon he was crowned King. However King Godwin wasn’t able to enjoy his new role and soon found himself travelling through his lands to fight his enemies. Even his brother wanted the crown for himself. King Godwin fought bravely and vanquished all his enemies. Many men died, but tired Godwin then found himself facing his most formidable foe.

Norman lived far away in another land but believed the old King had promised that he would rule after him. Gathering his army he set sail across the seas to fight the man whom he believed had stolen the crown from him.

The country waited for the matter to be decided and watched with awe as a fiery ball crossed the sky. Was it an omen? What would become of the kingdom?

By the site of a magical apple tree the men gathered and prepared to face their enemy. As the sun rose, it shone bright over them and soon they marched forward. The battle was long and bloody but Godwin fought all day leading his men against Norman and his army.

Sadly as the day came to end and light faded the King was found slain. Some of his men lost hope, but a few continued to fight. However by the end of the day the battle was lost. How the King was killed and by whom was not known but stories soon grew about his end.

Norman was offered the King's weight in gold to return Godwin to his family but he refused and ordered him to be thrown into the sea.

The people of the great kingdom fought on but eventually Norman was proclaimed King. However he continued to have to fight his enemies. As for Godwin, a mighty Abbey was built where he died and today people mark his passing by reliving the great battle.
