Geocache Description:

This is a great location to start your Grand fishing experience as you are at the shore of the largest water storage reservoir in the C-BT Project (Lake Granby), and the second largest body of water in the state, with 40 miles of shoreline.  Lake Granby provides some of the best Colorado fishing waters for trout and Kokanee Salmon.  Development along the lake shoreline is minimal as the lake is surrounded by government property.

Construction of the Lake Granby Dam started in late 1942 as part of the Colorado - Big Thompson Project.  The Colorado River was flowing through the rich farmlands of this valley that would eventually become the bottom of Lake Granby when the dam was completed, and would be surrounded by the Arapaho National Forest, Arapaho National Recreation Area, and Indian Peaks Wilderness Area.. Even though there was a work stoppage on the dam construction during World War II, it was finally completed and water started to fill up Lake Granby on September 14th, 1949.

There was very little land available around the lake for commercial and residential development, but one of the commercial developments that resided on the lake to your right as you look at the lake was the Beacon Boatel and Marina.  It consisted of eight hotel units and a cabin called "The Beach House" where the owner lived, and had boats available for the guests.  Tourists from all over Colorado, especially fishermen, came to this Boatel and enjoyed their time fishing and visiting the local sites. In the early 1970's the Carpenters bought the marina and owned it for a short three years, and then sold it to the McCloskeys who owned it for nine years.  In 1997 the Casteels bought the Beacon Landing Marina and in 2001 burned down the old hotel units and house with the help of the local fire departments.  They subsequently built some condominiums on the property and included a full service fishing gear and bait supply store, along with boats available for rental.  In 2014, the Debevecs purchased the marina.

If you have a few spare lures in your tackle box, trade them for one that is there or just leave them for the next fisherman.
