Atalaia (do árabe "at-talai'a"). Watchtower in military architecture , is a tower or high place , from where it oversees the surrounding territory. Usually part of the defensive system of a castle, being distributed in strategic places in the area around . In case of threat, the guards in the watchtowers give warnings or signals to the castle defenders.
The Watchman Treasure
Times were difficult and the people had a hard time to pay the King taxes. Despite constant battles , borders were prime locations and even in war buisness are made. In a prominente position the watchman took advantage of traders and smugglers, charging for his own silence.
Year after year his treasure was growing, and rumors began…
One day a misfortune led him on a journey to the capital, the King had heard about his activities and his treasure and sentenced him to exile. It´s said that the watchman never returned to his tower, leaving behind his desired treasure.

Os tempos eram duros e as pessoas tinham dificuldades para pagar os impostos rei. Apesar de constantes batalhas, as fronteiras eram locais privilegiados e até mesmo em guerra são feitos negócios. Numa posição prominente o vigia usava a sua vantagem sobre os comerciantes e contrabandistas, cobrando o seu próprio silêncio.
Ano após ano o seu tesouro crescia, e os boatos começaram...
Um dia, um infortúnio levou numa viagem para a capital, o Rei tinha ouvido falar sobre suas actividades e seu tesouro e condenou-o ao exílio. Diz-se que o vigia nunca mais voltou para sua torre, deixando para trás o seu desejado tesouro.

Historic Note
After the restoration of independence in 1640, it had to be planning new defenses to the walled village of Monsaraz, taking into account the new type of artillery guns which then began to generalize. There was also planning a more effective defense of the river that crossed the Alentejo region, which separated us from Spain. In this sense, Nicholas Langres came to Monsaraz in 1646 and made the inspection the fords of the Guadiana river. Then planned three towers (Watchmen Towers) in Monsaraz term: the first deployed on the mamelão of São Gens, the second in the Herdade das Pipas, the third in Ceuta Estate. The layout designed to Monsaraz included the construction of a new wall three fronts bulwark to protect the lower part of the population, bastion front of this three redentes in front of the towers of the fence and another on the south side, next to the castle.
