Geocache Description:

Stafnesviti Lighthouse is located at the westernmost point of the Reykjanes Peninsula, midway between Sandgerði Town and Hafnir Village. Built in 1925, it’s made of concrete and stands 11.5 metres high and 13 metres above sea level.

There are around 120 lighthouses scattered along the coast of Iceland, some of them quite prominent, standing proud and facing the harsh weathers of the North Atlantic. Others are more humble and weathered after serving passing ships and boats for decades. Most of them are under the supervision of the Icelandic Road and Coastal Administration and therefore visited on a regular basis for maintenance. One thing is for sure: they are well taken care of.

Some of these lighthouses now decorating the Icelandic shoreline are truly beautiful, proud landmarks and monuments of their makers. Some of them are located in quite remote places on rocks and points, a few metres from the powerful waves of the North Atlantic Ocean. Most lighthouses are accessible and popular to visit among hikers. For some reason, they are also very popularmotifs among photographers from across the world.

There are a few lighthouses in Iceland that are open to the public and sometimes offering concerts and art displays for visiting tourists and guests, such as Garðskagaviti Lighthouse (Gardskagaviti) at the tip of the Reykjanes Peninsula and Akranesviti Lighthouse on the Akranes Peninsula in West Iceland.
