A Balatonfüredi Állami Szívkórház története a 18. századra nyúlik vissza, mivel az 1716-os tihanyi apátsági birtokösszeíráskor feljegyezték, hogy Füreden savanyúvizek vannak. A kórház helyén Tenkovits Miksának másfél holdas telke volt, ezen fakadt az a forrás, amelyhez fürdőházat építtetett, és tíz fürdőkádban kazánnal melegített savanyúvízben biztosított fürdést a vendégeknek.
Később a fürdőházat tovább bővítették, majd 1869 és 1871 között Cometter Bernát terve szerint eklektikus stílusban felépült a Balatonra néző új szárny, az úgynevezett Erzsébet udvar. Később az egész épületegyüttest Erzsébet szanatóriumnak nevezték.
1912-1913-ban az úgynevezett Tibor fürdő épületszárnyával kialakult az egységes épület, és a homlokzatokat is átformálták, szecessziós ízlésben, ekkor már nemzetközileg is híres szanatóriumnak számított. 1949-ben állami kezelésbe került az intézet, 1970 óta végzi az országos és regionális ellátás keretében a szív- és érrendszeri betegek rehabilitációs kezelését.
