Geocache Description:

This is the fourth cache on the route. The views from the top of the hill, on Hayne Down, are fantastic on a clear day. From this cache you can either go and explore Bowerman's Nose (SX742805) and find the cache near there (GCRBYG) if you haven't already found it, or continue following the clear path down towards the next cache in this series and Moyle's Gate on the road below.

Bowermans Nose is an unusual rock formation which is found on Hayne's Down and has a story attached to it. Legend has it that years and years ago there was a renowned and well-liked hunter called Bowerman who had a pack of large and fierce hounds. Their favourite pastime was hunting on the moors and they were afraid of nothing, 'not even the devil itself'. This enraged the local witches as they wanted people to be afraid of them. One day Bowerman and the hounds were chasing a hare and it turned in to a narrow valley where a group of witches were practising their rites and they ran right through them. The witches were very angry about this and plotted their revenge. One of the witches turned herself in to a hare and led Bowerman and his dogs in to a trap where the group of witches had gathered. Bowerman and the hounds were surrounded and turned in to stone where they stood. The rock feature being Bowerman, still with his cap on his head and the stones around it, his hounds. It is said that on some dark and misty nights they come back to life and can be heard chasing their quarry across Hayne's Down.
