The Itelmeni, also known as the Itelmen and Kamchadal, are the original inhabitants of the Kamchatka Peninsula in Russia. The Itelmen language is distantly related to Chukchi and Koryak. The Itelmeni were nomads and hunter / gatherers. In the 18th century, all Itelmeni were brought into the Russian Orthodox Church and had to pay tribute to Russia. Also in that century the most tragic events in Itelmeni history occurred -- epidemics of small pox and “rotten fever,” probably influenza. By the 20th century the population had decreased dramatically and the Itelmeni language had largely disappeared. The majority of ethnic Itelmen today are native speakers of Russian.
